07.29.13: 1st Snatch Max

SNATCHES

I felt a little rushed this morning, because I woke up late. I ended up missing part of the warm-up, but got what I needed in. I started light with 95 lbs and worked myself up to 185 lbs. I was happy with the weight, but not the technique. I do not feel comfortable with weight over my head yet. Apparently, I need to work on a thing called snatch balances. I have yet to perform one of these, but from the sounds of it, I need to. I look forward working snatches!

07.24.13: Snatch Unders and GRT

AM: Got to the box a little earlier and decided to do some skill. I need to do more of this, to get some pull-ups, and DU's in. These two skills are my main goals for the next month.

Left shoulder started bothering me around round 3 but pushed through. I attempted all DU and actually got a 13 streak! Was super excited, since my longest run before that was 4. Performance was much better in the morning than the afternoon.

PM: Went down to Cumberland Park for GRT with the 45 ruck sack. It was just Ivan and I, but we spent 1.5 hours and completed a full circle circuit. Consisted of bear crawls, flutter kicks, crab walks, get-ups, lungs, bear crawls, thrusters, and did I mention bear crawls? Just some good living!

07.22.13: Wall Ball

PM: Decided to sleep in this morning, and attend the 4:30 pm class. I soon remembered why I go in the morning. There is no room, but it was nice to meet some new faces. I feel stronger and cannot wait to get my max next week. This will give me a good starting point. This was the first time I have done Wall Balls. I need some work performing wall balls. I need to get closer to wall, and catch the ball under me instead of in front of me. Torched by shoulders by falling forward.

07.16.13- Fatigue Death

Second week, and 1st back to back workout. I am sore, and a bit grumpy this morning. I got some good mid-line and skill work in. Stronger on the pull-ups than I expected. Grip is weak!

For the first time-- I am DEAD! I am not sure if it was the combination of traveling and back to back workouts. Kbs were pretty good 25/15/10. The air squats killed me, legs shaking uncontrollable.  25/15/10/20/10/10/5/5. The 400 m was more of a crawl, but I did not stop. Has to be the worse WoD I have done so far. I feel the foam roller coming on!

07.15.13- Against the clock

I normally start the week off with an AM workout, but woke up late. I accomplished this workout at the 4:30 session and regretted not making that morning. It appears that summer has finally arrived.

For the most part not a bad workout. Form started to deteriorate on the second round around 5 ground to overhead. Need to get stronger with the jerk and full extension.

Nashville Ruckstars Training

This weekend the Nashville Ruckstars decided to take a different approach and leave the woods of Percy Warner park and hit the Shelby Bottoms Greenway. We were accompanied by Ivan, Paul, Le, Renae, Jeff, and Drew on a 10 mile expedition. We included the normal ruck (35-50 lbs.) + the GoRuck Team weight (21 lbs), which is awesome, and a Bulgarian training bag (35 lbs). We handled off the additional weight as needed, so everyone could experience the SUCK! It is what it is! It took us 3.5 hours to accomplish our mission. Next week we are going to be hitting the canoe on the Buffalo!

Legs and body is pretty sore this week with the addition of crossfit, so I decided to take the running easy and stay with the lower mileage trail. Felt great afterwards but regretted not doing the red trail. I will not make the same mistake next week!

07.10.13: 2 A Day!

AM:
Pretty fun workout! I have been introduced to DU, I did not try them until Round 4, but ended up getting 8. I was more winded doing 8 DU than 90 singles, CRAZY!

PM: GRT
GoRuck Training down at Cumberland Park in Nashville, TN. Hopefully, we can get someone to make a video during this training. Super fun, but got interrupted by a servere lightning storm. Maybe next week will be better.

New to PC

I really felt this one in my lower back. Just starting to get the hang of things, and hopefully within a few weeks my body will adapt.

I need to incorporate at least 10 minutes of skill work each workout.

3 days a week right now is more than enough, my body aches, shoulders are tight and delts are tender.

If I am this sore, I must be doing something right? or wrong?

Extending Training into Crossfit

Monday, July 8, marks the beginning of a more intense workout regimen, Crossfit. Since, 2010 I have made dramatic changes in my life including: eating healthier, going to classes at the Y, and even running a few half marathons, but I have come to a realization, I would never push myself hard enough to truly make the changes I need to reach the next level.

Crossfit has become the new Walgreens, there is one on every corner. What makes one better than the next? If you approach it from that stance you are going at it the wrong way.  What you should be asking yourself is, “What am I trying to achieve and is this box, a term used for gym,  able to provide the tools to do so?” Each box is unique in how they execute their program. When I walked into Crossfit Rutherford in Murfreesboro, TN I knew this was the place for me and started right away.

Here are some reasons I decided to crossfit and where to settle down at:

[1] Crossfit is more than a workout, it’s a community:

Of course, it was intimidating the first time I walked in, and I knew no one or anything about crossfit, but I was greeted first thing not by the owners, but athletes. You quickly realize how supportive the community is and that everyone there has the same basic goal, to better yourself. I will never have to self motivate myself again.

[2] Find coaches that teach technique

All crossfit affiliates are required to attend a two-day trainer certificate course and receive their CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1). A lot is covered during those days and each person takes something different out the training. Make sure your goals are aligned with their goals and that they are looking out for your best interest. Technique or efficiency is important to me, and before every Strength WoD we perform the movement with a pvc pipe. To many people it may seem redundant, but it’s the foundation of all the movements.

[3] You are your weakest link

I thought I was in pretty decent condition until I tried these workouts. These workouts will humble you and force you to improve on your weaknesses. I have a tendency to avoid  what I suck at when training on my own. Embrace the suck and you will break the barrier that limits progress.  Stop making the weak, weaker by avoidance.

[4] Focuses on functional strength

I used to be a meat head and spend hours in the gym seeing how much I can bench press, yet I could not do a single pull-up. This much time commitment is not sustainable, especially as I look to the future with kids.  I want to have the cardiovascular, strength and stamina to keep up with those little demons. What application of benching 400 lbs will ever come into play?

[5] It’s fun and sustainable

Being a former athlete I have lost my competitive drive. Competition drives people to push themselves to the next level whether its competing with your previous results, or competing with other friends in the class, the workout begins to be fun again.

As I continued to learn new and effective ways to train, I am excited to incorporate the knowledge, skills and support system into my way of life.

Inaugural Franklin Half

Since, the Country Music Full Marathon in April I have been slacking on running. During that training period there was  a lot of alone time and self reflection, and what I learned was anything over 15 miles for me was dreadful. Since, than I have moved towards more weight orientated exercises and half marathons. Run Franklin hosted the Inaugural Franklin Half Marathon on June 22nd, 2013. The half featured a scenic 13.1 miles starting and ending in Downtown Historic Leiper’s Fork. Due to parking issues the race start time was pushed back 20 minutes, and everyone was prepared for one hellacious race. 3H would best describe the race, hot, humid and hilly, but what more could you as for on a summer day in Tennessee. Looking for the following up run next year.
